WE JOINED THE NAVY

GB
1962

Dir: Wendy Toye
Starring: Kenneth More and Lloyd Nolan

The story of the riotous, romantic, exciting, astonishing and highly entertaining adventures of a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy

Kenneth More does his utmost best in this wearisome comedy, based on the 1959 novel of the same name by John Winton. It features a scene early on that was filmed at London Marylebone, deputising for nearby Paddington. No locomotives are seen, but a green DMU is visible in the background of one shot.

The scene at Marylebone, with maroon coaching stock present in the platform
In this view across the taxi road at Marylebone, a green DMU is in the left hand background. Although unconfirmed, it is almost certainly a Class 115.
In this second platform view, we can see that the carriages have been adorned with Paddington Torquay Paignton Dartmouth roof destination boards. Dartmouth is of course famous for being a railway station that was never served by any trains. To add further to the belief that this is Paddington, a tannoy announcement calls for the 12:30 ‘Torbay Express’, leaving from Platform One and calling at Reading, Westbury, Taunton, Exeter, Newton Abbot, Torquay, Paignton, Churston and Kingswear!
