Dir: James Clavell
Starring: Sidney Poitier and Patricia Routledge

A trainee engineer takes up a position teaching a group of unruly students in an east London school

This drama was based on E. R. Braithwaite’s semi-autobiographical 1959 novel of the same name and features two brief railway shots. During the opening credits there is a shot of the frontage of Wapping Underground station, then part of the East London section of the Metropolitan Line but now redeveloped to form part of the London Overground network. This is then followed shortly after by a shot of Sidney Poitier walking down Johnson Street in Shadwell looking towards the London, Tilbury & Southend line viaduct and a BR blue-liveried Class 302 EMU can be seen crossing.

This is Wapping High Street, London E1, and the entrance to the old Wapping London Underground station is on the left
