THE UNDESIRABLE NEIGHBOUR

GB
1963
26mins
Dir: Gordon Hales
Starring: Anthony Newlands and Vanda Godsell

An attractive young housewife sues a local gossip for slander

This short crime film was part of the series known as The Scales of Justice, a run of 13 British cinema featurettes produced by Anglo-Amalgamated between 1962 and 1967. They are short films, largely half-hour in length, that were similar in style to the Scotland Yard series. Each film was based on an actual criminal case, with only the names changed, and featured an introduction by the crime writer Edgar Lustgarten. The Undesirable Neighbour was No.5 in the series and features a brief scene at the old Crawley station with a formation of 2 HAL’s arriving on a Victoria train. The units are numbers 2665, 2622 and 2604. This is thenv followed by a brief shot of the entrance to Victoria station itself.

An electric train formed of 2 HAL units pulls into Crawley station before its relocation a few hundred yards to the east
As the train draws to a stand we get to see the cab details in close up. Look very closely through the open window on the right and one can make out the set number 2622. Through doing this, the lead unit was identified as No.2665 and the rear unit had vehicle 12189, a DTC belonging to set 2604. I wish it was always as easy as this.
