THE SECRET GARDEN

Dir: Fred Wilcox
Starring: Margaret O’Brien and Herbert Marshall

An orphaned girl goes to stay with her uncle and revitalises his family’s life

This drama is the second of five screen adaptations of the classic 1911 novel of the same name by Frances Hodgson Burnett, a novel first published after serialization in The American Magazine. The film includes one very good stock shot of an ex-GWR 2301 Class ‘Dean Goods’ 0-6-0 on a short passenger train.

The single railway shot in the film shows a former GWR ‘Dean Goods’ 0-6-0 making light work of a four coach passenger train. This may be somewhere on the former Cambrian network in Mid Wales, and note that the carriages are vintage clerestories.
