Dir: Joan Littlewood
Starring: James Booth and Barbara Windsor

A sailor returns to the East End after two years at sea, only to find that his house has been demolished and his wife has gone

This ‘kitchen sink’ drama with a lighter tone is based on a 1960 play called Sparrers Can’t Sing and was filmed on location around Limehouse, Stepney and Whitechapel. In one scene, a pair of Class 302 EMU’s are passing open ground by a housing estate and in another, one can be seen crossing a road bridge.

In this view looking north down Cannon Street Road, Whitechapel, a Class 302 is crossing the road bridge at the end
As children play, another pair of Class 302’s pass across the railway arches. This is the northern section of Cowley Gardens, and the train is on the section of elevated railway between Fenchurch Street and Shadwell stations.
