RED AND BLUE

Dir: Tony Richardson
Starring: Vanessa Redgrave and John Bird

A cabaret singer travels to Paris for a nightclub engagement and recalls romantic episodes in her life

This whimsical story was the ‘red’ part of a ‘portmanteau’ feature entitled Red White and Zero, the ‘white’ story was a film called The White Bus and the ‘zero’ part was a film called Ride of the Valkyrie (both featured separately). This dramatic musical followed the British new wave movement of the time that seems some what outdated today, yet it is arguably the best of the trio. It opens with a brief scene featuring the ‘Night Ferry’ at London Victoria station.

Vanessa Redgrave hurries to catch the Night Ferry at London Victoria
She is quickly ushered aboard as the train is getting ready to depart. One wonders what happened to the illuminated sign?
