A chance photograph may reveal a murderer’s identity, and someone is after the photographer

This crime drama is based around a rather predictable theme, but it gets by well enough. It features a sequence where John Bentley takes a train journey to Winchester. This opens with a darkened shot of a Southern Region express passing through a station followed by a superb shot of streamlined Bulleid ‘Merchant Navy’ Class 4-6-2 No.35020 Bibby Line drawing to a halt at Winchester (City) station. This is a thoughtful touch, for as no filming actually took place in the city, this must have been a shot filmed by a second unit for the sake of continuity. Whatever the source, it would go on to reappear the following year in The Reluctant Bride – qv.

This darkened image shows a Southern Region express passing through a station. A signal box is visible on the right and the end of the opposite platform is visible behind the rear of the train. Could that be a level crossing in the background? Or is it just a barrow crossing?
Unrebuilt ‘Merchant Navy’ pacific No.35020 Bibby Line pulls into Winchester City station with an express.
The locomotive draws to a halt adjacent to the signal box. The ‘City’ appendage was added from 26th September 1949 to differentiate between it and Winchester’s other station at Chesil. That station closed from 7th March 1960 but it would not be until 10th July 1967 that the City suffix was dropped from here.
