BILLY LIAR

GB
1963
1hr 38mins
Dir: John Schlesinger
Starring: Tom Courtenay and Julie Christie

An undertaker’s clerk lives in a fantasy world that he finds hard to separate from reality

Based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Keith Waterhouse this very strange comedy drama has one railway scene at the end. Despite being filmed almost entirely in Bradford the scene features London Marylebone station, and although no locomotives are visible, BR Mk1 coaching stock and parcels vans are present.

Tom Courtenay waits at Marylebone for Julie Christie
Passengers board the train to London…..at Marylebone! By the 1960’s genuine carriages were beginning to be used for ‘interior’ shots and not the ubiquitous studio set that was so prevalent in the past. This is the inside of a BR Mk1 TSO.
The London train awaits departure. The rear vehicle is Mk.1 TSO No.4247
Having got off to buy some milk Tom Coutenay returns to the platform, but its too late, his train has gone.
