BE MY GUEST

GB
1965
1hr 22mins
Dir: Lance Comfort
Starring: Avril Angers and David Hemmings

A family inherits a seaside hotel and has trouble attracting guests, until their son’s rock group begins bringing them in

This musical is rather fun and features a young Steve Marriott prior to his Small Faces fame. It was largely set in Brighton and features shots of a ‘Brighton Belle’ EMU passing the camera at speed on the Ouse Valley Viaduct, a ‘stock shot’ of a passing Met-Camm ‘Blue Pullman’ DMU, and a very obscure night shot of an EMU working a headcode 12 service. There are also some scenes filmed inside a BR Southern Region buffet vehicle, with Steve Marriott working behind the counter. The film was a follow-up to the commercially successful Live It Up!

The ‘Brighton Belle’ on the Ouse Valley Viaduct in what is a very unusual view of both. This is actually a stock shot from the 1952 British Transport Films production Train Time.

This shot was slipped in during the movie, but why it was included is anyone’s guess. It appears to show a BR (SR) SUB on a headcode 12 service but the exact location remains unclear. Does anyone recognise the signal numbers on the ground position signals?
