DEFENCE OF THE REALM

GB
1986

Dir: David Drury
Starring: Gabriel Byrne and Greta Scacchi

A journalist investigates the link between an influential MP and a Russian agent

This popular political thriller includes a notable sequence whereby Byrne and Scacchi meet on Hungerford Bridge. Two and four-car EPB EMU’s feature prominently in these shots, all of which are in the BR blue & grey colour scheme contemporary at the time. Similar such units are also seen crossing a viaduct in south London. Lastly, there is an excellent ground level shot of Blackfriars station as viewed from the Upper Thames Street road underpass.

As Gabriel Byrne enters a property somewhere in south London, a formation of 4 EPB EMU’s cross the viaduct on the adjacent railway line
This very unusual view shows Blackfriars station from the Upper Thames Street road underpass. An EPB EMU is in the station platforms.
This is Hungerford Bridge, with more EPB’s visible through the girders standing in the platforms of Charing Cross station
EPB’s continue to roll by as Gabriel Byrne and Greta Scacchi converse
A similar view to that above shows the rear of the train
The Hungerford Bridge scene finishes with this particularly fine view of a stationary EPB unit
