A British soldier is kidnapped by IRA terrorists, with unexpected results for one of his captors

This critically acclaimed thriller features a shot of the entrance to London King’s Cross station, plus an unusual shot of the former Piccadilly Line, Leslie Green-designed, two-storey red brick glazed building of South Kensington Underground station. The fantastic opening tracking shot of a fairground was filmed at Laytown in County Meath and in a close-up shot, one of Northern Ireland Railways three Class 111 General Motors diesels passes over the River Nanny bridge on a train of Mk2s, sadly dubbed to the sound of an HST! The film was known as The Soldier’s Wife until shortly before its release.

One of NIR’s trio of GM Class 111’s is caught in close-up at it speeds across the River Nanny viaduct at Laytown. Martin Baumann contacted me to say that this loco is No.112 Northern Counties, the identity of which was confirmed to him by the NIR driver of the loco that day who noticed the filming as he crossed the bridge!!
