WHAT A CARRY ON!

GB
1949

Dir: John Blakeley
Starring: Jimmy Jewel and Ben Warriss

Two friends enlist in the Army and get picked on by a sergeant-major who has misappropriated the mess funds

This burlesque comedy was originally intended as a vehicle for Frank Randle and Dan Young, under the title Somewhere On Parade. However, it was re-worked during production under the title What a Carry On! and was for a while to be known as That’s My Man. There is an early scene filmed on Station Approach outside Manchester London Road station before its radical transformation into Piccadilly in 1960. Not a lot of the station is recognisable in this sequence, which also includes a glimpse of the former LNER grain warehouse that was adjacent in Store Street.
