A mill owner’s ambitious daughter almost ruins her husband’s political career

This drama was based on the 1945 novel of the same name by James Hilton and has sections that were filmed in and around Macclesfield. A couple of railway shots are included at the start of the film, one is a steamy shot of a 2-6-4T with an 0-6-0 tender loco running light, and one shows a local passenger train hauled by an LMS 2-6-4T passing through a cutting. There is also a brief shot of Westminster Bridge with some trams crossing.

Looking down onto Macclesfield and this smoky scene is complemented by a pair of steam locos running light, probably a 2-6-4 tank and an 0-6-0 tender loco
Macclesfield was used in the film to depict ‘a northern mill town’ and this is another shot of the Cheshire townscape with a local passenger train storming through a cutting
This is the standard stock-shot used to depict ‘London’. Westminster Bridge with at least five trams scuttling across.
